Raving mad?

Gathering to dance might not be sensible right now. But it’s badly needed

Illegal raves never really disappeared. They just went deep underground. And now they’re starting to resurface, with the young especially chafing against the restrictions of lockdown.

We need our tribe. We need to be able to share a sense of joy and release. As the earliest cave paintings show, gathering together to dance is a primal urge, as old as the human race. So after this period of enforced isolation, is it any real surprise that people are gathering to party? Or to protest?

I’m seeing strong echoes of 1989 right now, in all sorts of ways. Except my generation were too loved up to fight for anything but our right to party. And my son’s generation are protesting for equality, and against climate change.

I wrote about this in The Guardian this week. If you’re interested, read it here.
